Hornby people rally to rebuild gutted church
The Hornby community has rallied round to rebuild an old church which was gutted in a suspicious fire on November 27. More than 160 persons, twice as many as the normal congregation, attended a special memorial service for the burnt-out St Columba's Anglican Church yesterday morning, according to its vicar (the Rev, Martin Warren).
At a meeting after the service parishioners and residents decided to rebuild the church and hall at an estimated cost of between $BO,OOO and $90,000. “We have received $llOO in donations so far, which is terrific,” said Mr Warren. “But the church and hall were insured for only $24,000. which leaves a big deficit.” The member of Parliament for Yaldhurst (Mr M.
A. Connelly) called a public meeting on November 29 to discuss ways of raising money for a new church. Mr Warren said the church hall especially was sadly missed. It had been lully booked except for two Tuesday nights in each month. Detectives of the Hornby (.LB. are still investigating the fire.
