Pay talks 'delicate’
Negotiations over payclaims by stationary engine drivers were “in a very delicate position,” said the secretary of the Canterbury, Otago, and Southland branch of the Engine Drivers’ Union (Mr R. H. Caffell) last evening. The secretary of the union (Mr G. H. Andersen) toured New Zealand last week to advise members that an impasse had been reached in the national
award negotiations on behalf of the 1200 men who are responsible for the boilers which provide steam for the nation’s industries. The Canterbury, Otago, and Southland branch held a meeting on Friday with employers. A meeting of the branch executive was held at Oamaru yesterday but Mr Caffell said that there would be no comment until later this week.
