Waimairi wins surf carnival

By

RAY CAIRNS

' A large backlog of senior events, which had them dragging on to 3.30 p.m., made the season’s first surf I lifesaving carnival some thing rather more than the | scheduled half-day it was; meant to use. And at the very end of it,, the first in the series of' tapiin relays to decide Canterbury’s representative in; the national championships was won by Waimairi. not surprisingly, runner-up in the national championship last season. In the often testing surf at Pines Beach. Waimairi was never really tested by Taylors Mistake and the only real contest in a disappointing event was for third, between New Brighton’s swimmers and the craft men of the second Taylors team. the junior tapiin relay, j inexplicably attracted only I two entries and was quickly !a no-contest with New j ißrighton getting a complete; leg ahead of South Brighton. ; But for a change, one of] the women competitors was ; the day’s outstanding indivi- | dual, Mary Gibson, in her' first season led North; Beach to a domination of itheir events. I She won the beach flags, ■ one of the few finals decided, and was one of the { most clearcut heat winners i ; in the beach sprint. To cap | | the day Gibson ran the ; anchor leg in the beach; relay, almost a non-event, i | such was the ease with: which North Beach was | victorious. Then Jill Clark, also a heat winner in the sprint; and a relay team member., ' won the surf face but not quite by the same case with {which Paul Rowe won the’ junior event. The latter led a New' Brighton domination: its i | competitors filled six of the I I first eight places, only the j I consistent Kelvin Bishop ! (South Brighton), second again and Waimairi’s Martin Forbes intruding. Forbes was another individual to reap rich rewards. He won the beach flags and! his heat of the ski race as I well. Just as the New Brighton juniors had their own way in the surf so South Brighton’s seniors led the way. Russell McConnochie was a very' clear winner from his club-mates Bryce Ward; and Graeme Beaumont. However, an interesting, feature was the ease with which last year’s juniors took the step up. Stephen Ward, Derek Ferigo (New Brighton) and David Clarke, (North Beach) all finished in , the first 10 and qualified for , the final.
