Tennis Tennis ranking matches
A young Woolston player, Douglas Chapman, came close to achieving an upset in the latest round of tennis ranking matches at Wilding Park. He offered spirited compei tition to the experienced Elmwood man, Warren Edgecumbe, and took him to three sets before losing in a tie-breaker. A former Canterbury No 1, Edgecumbe was eighth on last season’s provincial ranking list. Chapman was twentieth, but he will improve his placing if he can maintain the form he showed against Edgecumbe. The wiry Stephen Harley fought off a challenge from Graeme Liddell to win in two sets, while the secondranked Ralph Webster overpowered his young opponent, Richard Dalman. In the women’s matches, Robyn Hunt and Shirley Haig left no doubt about their right to occupy the top two positions on the ladder. Both women won easily, and Judith Phillips and Jane Wilson also confirmed their high platings. In the sharpest reversal Stephanie Field came back to win well against Julie Verdellen after salvaging only one game from the first set. Results were:— MEN K. Elliott bear B. T. Knight, 6-0, 6-3; S.
