Police H.Q. fire

Christchurch policemen were temporarily without headquarters yesterday after fire broke out on the fifteenth floor of the central police station. The building was evacuated about 10 a.m. when several paper rubbish bags stored near an incinerator on the top floor caught alight. Although the automatic sprinkler system worked, the bags were still smouldering when firemen arrived. The flames were quickly put out using the building’s internal hose reels, and fire damage was minimal. The water used was more harmful. however. and trickled down through several

storeys, damaging walls and! roof tiles, and saturating j carpets. . The building was reoccupied within 45 minutes of the alarm being given. The fire was believed to have been caused by a cigarette. A small shed at Brooklands was severely damaged by first shortly after 6 o’clock last evening. Engines from the Brooklands Volunteer Brigade and from the St Albans station attended. Engines from the central; brigade also attended a I small garage fire in Hoon Hay! about 7.30 p.m. Damage was minor.
