Parun on the mend

Onny Parun, (New Zealand) caused an upset in the South African open tennis championship yesterday when he beat the sixth;seeded American, Cliff Richey, in the opening round. Parun. who recently had a major operation to fix a long-troublesome neck ailment, won the match, 6-3, 7-5.
The top seed, Harold Solomon (United States), won his second-round match, 6-4, 6-4, over Paul Kronk, of Australia," and Heinz Gunthardt (Switzerland) beat John James (Australia), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The top seed in the women’s singles, Yvonne Vermaak (South Africa) is out, losing 6-2, 0-6, 7-5 to her compatriot, Alison McDade, in the third round.
The women’s event is not a strong one, with many of the world’s leading players in Australia for the Federation Cup.
