New twist to cycling
By
RAY CAIRNS
A much-overdue gathering of the South Island cycling centres will take place at Timaru’s Caledonian Ground today. with the meetings of Southland, Otago, Canterbury and the latter’s Timaru club in the guise of South Canterbury. In a sense, it is a revival I
or the old triangular meeting . — with South Canterbury ; the extra party, of course — : with a difference. The very good Timaru track is rather I under-used, .and as the clos-i ’ est thing to a central point • could well prove an ideal ! regular venue if the event . becomes an annual feature of the track calendar. i It was originally mooted
; that teams should consist of ’ six riders each, this partly ■ because Canterbury was r worried at the southern cen- ■ tres’ not being able to field a - full quota of eight. But : Southland has named seven, ! Otago six and a reserve and ; Timaru eight, so the Canter- : bury squad will be increased by Brent Kircher and anl other at the track.
