Tyre prices up
Prices of vehicle batteries and tyres have risen after approval for an increase was given by the Department of Trade and Industry last week. The increases were 5 per cent for batteries and 7 per cent for tyres. In Christchurch a 12-volt, nine-plate car battery now costs about $59, a heavy duty 12-volt, 15-plate truck battery about $B7. A 640 x 13 tubeless tyre now costs about $5O, compared with the old price of $47.25, and the equivalent in a radial tyre, 175 x 13, has risen from $53.60 to $58.45. : ply tread now costs $25.86. ’ The former price was $23.40. An eight-ply rear tractor tyre in size 14 x 30 now • costs $370.85; before it cost $346.60. The Firestone Tire ’ and Rubber Company plans ' to manufacture the increasingly popular 15 x 30 size locally to bring prices down. At present, the imported 15 ' x 30 size costs $419.40.
