World link in fraud
PA Wellington The United States dollar fraud cracked this week by the New Zealand police might be linked with international dollar fraud forgeries. A United States Treasury j official is coming to New! Zealand to investigate the: fraud. Interpol records of forged United States $lOO bills that surfaced in parts of the United States and Italy in 1974 show* similarities to the New Zealand forgeries, also mostlv $lOO bills. Staff in the document examination section at police headquarters in Wellington —who so far have received forged bills from trading banks in many parts of New Zealand — said that the printing plates used for the New Zealand forgeries might also have been used in the 1974 overseas forgeries. The police would not give an opinion of the quality of the forgeries thev have, but since the police warned banks of the fraud — on Monday — several Wellington banks, unable to differentiate, have : sent in forgeries and legal United States money.
