THE LEADING LIGHT

He returned from bowls one evening and told his wife that f ‘his” four had won a tournament. He had a prize to prove it. The next day while wifey was shopping she bumped into another bowler’s wife who mentioned that her husband’s rink had won the match. That evening the wife mentioned that Mrs Blank had spoken about her husband’s rink winning the match. “Yes it’s the same team” said hubby. “Old Blank skips for me.” Later in the week from another source she heard how Blank’s team had played great bowls to win the title. “Are you sure you’re the team leader dear?” she asked. “I’ll take you along on Saturday and you can have a look,” he answered. Saturday came and along to the bowling green they went. He selected seat for his wife handy to their rink as the players unpacked their bags. Quietly he spoke to his wife. “You’ve seen Burgess and Boycott tossing up

in the test matches, you know they’re the captains. Watch and see who tosses up here.” The bell rang and our hero stepped on to the green. After handshakes all round he produced a 50 cent piece and asked his opposite number to call. Up went the coin. He won the toss and quite loudly told the opposing lead to take the mat. “Did you see who tossed up?” he asked, “and who let the other team bowl first.” His wife was quite impressed. As the game progressed they changed ends he loudly told his skip, “Go on Jim, draw a couple more shots.” Whispering to his wife he asked. “Did you hear me tell him what to do?” As they walked home he clinched the convincing of his wife by adding that in cricket the ace batsmen always opened the innings. At least one bowler’s wife has been brainwashed about who’s who and what’s what
