Blow to Banabans
The British Government has ruled against the displaced Banaban people and decreed that the once-phos-phate-rich ocean island will be included in the new independent Gilbert Islands State. The British decision came after nearly four days of inconclusive argument at the Gilbert Islands Constitutional conference, and was immediately greeted by a walk-out by the Banaban delegation. A Foreign Office spokesman told NZPA-Reu-ter later: “In the absence of any agreed compromise, it was left to the British Government.” — London.
