New ships for East Asia run
The final sailing of the Hupeh from Lyttelton this week precedes the appearance next month of two larger K-class ships by the New Zealand Unit Express Service, for the Lyttelton end of the East Asia run. , The Hupeh and the Poyang will be replaced by the Kwangsi and the Kwiechow to provide extra capacity on the Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Philippines run. , Both replacement vessels will handle unitised and break-hulk cargoes, containers. refrigerated products, bulk oils, and heavy lifts 'with their own cranes and derricks. I The Kwangsi was formerly the Perseus, and the kwiechow wasi named -Phemius. both Blue Funnel ‘Line ships, Their new names are a link.witft the Kwangsi and the Kwiechow of the 19605, when the service first started. The executive operations manager of New Zealand Unit Express (Mr I. D. Goddard) has said that both ships are ideally suited to the New Zealand-East Asia trade.
