Alcoa to expand
NZPA Melbourne Alcoa of Australia, Ltd whose expansion in the last decade has been mainly channelled into its West Australian alumina activities. is spending sAustBsM to expand capacity of its Point Henry (Victoria) aluminium smelter from 100,000 to 157.000 tonnes a year. Expectations of a strong growth in export markets, particularly in Japan and South-East Asia, are implicit in the move.
The expansion means that total Australian aluminium smelting capacity will increase from 257,000 tonnes to more than 700,000 tonnes a year by the mid-1980s, if present industry plans are fulfilled.
