Minister defends examiner
PA Wellington The Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Adams-Schnei-der) said yesterday that he had every confidence in the impartiality of the Examiner of Commercial Practices in considering Ceramco’s takeover bid for the MSI Corporation. He was commenting on the view of Labour’s spokesman on Consumer Affairs (Mr R. D. Douglas) that the take-over bid should be referred to the Commerce Commission.
“This course is infinitely preferable to allowing the matter to be considered in secret by the Examiner of Commercial Practices,” Mr Douglas said.
But Mr Adams-Schneider said: “I have every confidence in the impartiality of the Examiner, and should it be deemed necessary by him to refer the matter to the Commerce Commission, their decision will also have cognisance of the interests of the New Zealand public. “I remind Mr Douglas that it was the National Government that took the decision on mergers and take-overs out of the hands of the Min-, ister, arid therefore away from the political arena.”
