Lincoln lacks room
Students enrolled at Lincoln College next year might have accommodation problems. Preliminary enrolment figures showed that student numbers would be up next year, but the demand for residential places far exceeded the accommodation available, said Professor J. D. Stewart, principal of Lincoln College.
Professor Stewart was speaking at a meeting of the college council. “After giving priority to senior students, women students, overseas returning students, and new overseas students, there are only 117 places available for 470 applicants,” Professor Stewart said.
However, a tender has been accepted for the construction of two accommodation blocks, similar in design to the Centennial Halls. Work is expected to start on these soon and completion is planned for October, 1979, | with the students to move I in early in 1980. Professor Stewart told the meeting that a programme of maintenance and improvements to the refectory-union ! complex was being drawn up and should take two years to complete. This would include improvements to the kitchen area and the construction of extra storage space. Financial support would be sought from the University Grants Committee for this project. Flooding problems in ’ the I
Burns Wing at the college should soon be solved, Professor Stewart said. Architects had recommended plastering of cracks in the floor joints caused by water pressure.
Professor Stewart said that meetings and courses held at I the college during the year! had become very popular. These included a grapegrowing and wine-marketing! course, attended by 140 people; a soil-science refresh-! er course, attended by 56; i and a course on black and 1 coloured wool, which attrac-I ted 160 people.
“These one, two or three-1 day courses are the most| effective form of extention; that the college is involved! in,” said Professor Stewart. I
