Big bottle store planned

The biggest bottle store of its kind in the South Island will be built near the present Eastern Tavern in Christchurch if City Council planning approval can be obtained.

i Wilson Neill, Ltd, wants to put the development at the corner of Fitzgerald Avenue and Hereford Street, demolishing two houses and a corner shop to allow room for j the bottle store, parking and I landscaping. I The drive-in bottle store i would be associated with the I Cashel Street corner Eastern Tavern. The company has a (conditional interest in that I property, and a plan to convert the building back into a hotel.

That part of the block fronting on to Hereford Street is in a Residential 5 zone, and separate bottle stores are not a predominant use along with licensed hotels. Part of the residential zone is already in car-parking for the tavern and existing bottle store. The entire development would have 84 carparks. Neighbours of the proposed bottle store have objected that the development would lower property values and bring more traffic and street parking to the area. One objector represents an eight-unit flat complex on the’ site boundary in Hereford Street. A town-planning decision i has been reserved.
