600 refugees likely

PA Wellington New Zealand could comfortably absorb another 600 refugees, said the Minister of Immigration (Mr Gill) yesterday. But he denied a Radio New Zealand report that if the Cabinet approved his proposals next week, up to 400 refugees could be admitted. “I have not given any figures at all,” he said. “The situation is that the department is discussing with the church groups who handle them.

They have made a report, and the report is now with the Treasury which is also making a report. “I hope to see the reports tomorrow — if I don’t, then it will not be in time for the Cabinet on Monday.” Mr Gill said New Zealand would “look at” those refugees regarded by the United Nations as “top priority.” If more refugees were to be admitted, these could include Cambodians and Laotians, as well as more Vietnamese, he said.
