Long ride earns $l60 for S.P.C.A.
Three young men were ex-j hausted when they arrived in I Christchurch after taking turns riding a bicycle from Dunedin on Monday — but they had raised $l6O for the S.P.C.A. Martin Keen, aged 25, an animal lover, said that he was “incensed” that the public were not paying for the S.P.C.A.’s ambulance so he had decided to raise some money for it. He asked lan Gottermeyer, aged 17, and Desmond John, aged 25, to join him on a sponsored bicycle ride from; Dunedin to Christchurch. They agreed, although neither of them had done anv distance cycling before. A Christchurch bicycle hire company provided a 10-speed bicycle for the journey and a caravan hire firm lent a; caravan for the' men to sleep[ and eat in on the way. Several friends accompanied them in cars and two children towed a cat and dog in a cart through small townships on i the way, raising about $4O i towards the cause. i
