Bisphan, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yester- * day. No plea was entered by] Shane Piripi Turner, aged 24, unemployed. When bail was sought by counsel (Mr J. Knowles) it was opposed by Sergeant B. ' N. Thompson. The Magistrate said he I was in the position where he had granted bail to the defendant on Tuesday against strong police opposi- ' tion and Turner was again before him. “This time the remand will be in custody,” ' he said. This alleged offence oc-| curred on Monday. No plea, was entered. THEFT ALLEGED John Cowan, aged 19, a salesman, was remanded to December 1, without plea on a charge of theft. Bail was set at $5OO. Cowan is alleged to have ■ stolen various cheques and a sum of money to a total; : value of $1044, the property of his employer, W. and R. Jack, Ltd. The alleged offence was committed between March 7 and May 26 this year. CEMENT THEFT CHARGE ■ A driver who is alleged to 1
| have stolen about 250 bags of cement, valued at $920, the property of Winstone j (South Island), Ltd, was remanded without plea to December 6. ! William Thomas Rob-! lerston, aged 26, was allowed' bail of $750. The alleged offence was committed between April 1 and November 24 this year. A company director, aged 29, charged with receiving 50 bags of cement, valued at $lB4, the property of Win- ! stones, from Robertson, was j ;remanded without plea to! December 6. The man, who was granted interim suppression of his name, was granted bail of $5OO, with a surety of $5OO. ! The alleged offence was 'committed on November 24.

POLLUTION DENIED >! A prosecution against the Christchurch Gas Company for polluting the Heathcote River in September was unable to proceed yesterday. The prosecution, brought ■ by the Christchurch Drainage Board, had been adjourned to January 31. The Gas Company has denied the offence.
