Man dies in 50m plunge
The driver of this Lion Breweries tanker-trailer unit was killed when his vehicle left State Highway 1 and crashed 50m down a hillside about 9 p.m. on Tuesday. He was
Richard Tukutalii Mita, aged 38, married, of 19 Mopray Avenue, Bishopdale.
The accident occurred about 400 m south of the Okarahia River in the Hundalee Hills.
The Kaikoura police said that the tanker, which was empty, had been travelling south when it failed to take a bend, and careered across the wrong side of the road and over a bank. Mr Mita was killed instantly, the police said.
The kaikoura Volunteer Fire Brigade’s rescue unit had to be called to free the driver from the crushed cab.
