Black ban put on hotel
1 A black ban was put on) the Yaldhurst Hotel by the Canterbury Trades Council yesterday, and staff stayed on strike for the third day. The dispute is over the dismissal of three hotel staff, whose notices take effect today. A picket would be mounted at the hotel today, said the assistant, secretary of the Canterbury Hotel Workers' Union (Mr G. D. [Harding) yesterday. [ Asked why the dispute [could not be settled by al hearing of a grieveance committee, Mr Harding said that the Industrial Relations Act provided a framework to solve such disputes, but in [■this case time was of ira-i Iportance. ; “This is more of a gut. reaction from people not pre- , pared to put up with being (pushed around after having I given long and loyal service.” he said. The union alleges that the .manager (Mr G. Jansen) has i[dismissed the three staff to [replace them with members of his family when he takes ’[over the hotel’s lease from > | Lion Breweries. Mr Jansen .[has declined to comment. The union and management . held a further meeting last [evening. Mr Harding said that ,[a proposal would be put to a si meeting of the staff this • J morning, but would not i elaborate.
