Coast land will be retired
Tn the interests of soil conservation and slip stabilisation the Land Settlement Board has bought the Tawaho property on the Kaikoura coast. The 742 ha property was bought at auction for $335,000 and will be retired from grazing until
the land is stabilised to avoid disruptions to rail and road traffic in the slip-prone area. The property includes three shingle fans which frequently block road and rail traffic. About 850 ha of land on two adjoining properties
are scheduled for retirement as well and other properties are under consideration. Some of the land, said the Minister of Lands (Mr V. S. Young), may eventually be used for timber production. nnzpaS charleston (South
