Second operation for Joel
NZPA Melbourne A two-month-old Ashburton baby suffering from a bile duct condition has undergone further surgery at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital. A hospital spokesman said that the first operation. performed almost a month ago on Joel Edmonds, did not have the required results. Doctors then used a section of the child’s bowel to connect the liver to the bowel.
The spokesman said that the second operation to extend the drainage from the liver was performed about a week ago and it would probably be two weeks and a ha'lf before it was known whether it was successful.
The child was taken to Melbourne for treatment for a condition known as biliary atresia—the malformation or absence of the bile duct.
