Union cautions callers

The Canterbury Clerical Workers’ Union had a stern warning for members who telephoned yesterday expressing a wish to resign .

The message was that anyone who resigned would be “out in the cold.”

“You’ll have to negotiate your own award. You won’t get any benefits from the union at all.” one clerical worker said she was told when she tele-

phoned the union office and said she wanted to resign.

The woman said she was told she would have to put in a written resignation and send her yellow membership card. She was told she would get a refund.

One question on the minds of some contemplating resignation was whether they would be entitled to vote if the

union held a ballot on membership. The secretary of the Canterbury union (Mrs D. Shannon said last evening that this point was not clear.

However, only a few members had telephoned the union yesterday asking about resignation. Three non-union members had also telephoned — to sign up with the union, Mrs Shannon said.
