Mr Frank Hinton had lifetime in journalism

Mr Frank Hinton, who had been associated with newspapers all his life, died on Saturday aged 81. Mr Hinton, who was born and educated in Invercargill, started his journalistic career as a cadet reporter on the then “Southland Daily ! News.” During World War 1 he served in the New Zealand Medical Corps, and on his return to New Zealand worked; on the “Southland DailyNews” as a reporter. From there he shifted to Christchurch where he joined the “Sun.” staff as a■ leader writer. When the ' “Sun” closed in 1937, Mr' Hinton became associate editor of the “Otago Daily Times.” From the “Otago Daily 1 Times” Mr Hinton went into

partnership with Mr Alan Wood and .established the "Westport News.” Mr Hinton as editor, and Mr Wood as advertising manager. Mr Hinton remained with the “Westport News” for 17 wears before it was taken over 'by the “Nelson Evening Mail.” He went into partial retirement. His work after that time included the writing of the : centennial supplement for the “Timaru Herald.” For more than 10 years Mr ■ Hinton had been a part-time : editorial writer for “The 1 Press,” specialising in foreign i affairs. In his earlier days Mr Hinton was an active tennis player. He is survived by his wife and a son and a daughter.
