Carpet ban lifted
The Canterbury Trades Council has lifted its black ban bn the U.E.B. Marlin Carpet factory at Bromley, after assurances by the company that it will not stop the spinning there for at least two years.
The unions became concerned about the plant’s future when the company closed the weaving section earlier this year. Keeping the
spinning will mean that about 60 workers’ jobs are safe for at least two years.
Two weaving looms are being sent to the company’s carpet factory in Auckland this week. The secretary of the Canterbury Woollen Workers’ Union (Mr D, Shenker) said that it was hoped this would generate more work for the Christchurch spinning workers.
