General Election
Sir, — This evening I attended an address by Mr Holland (Nat. Fendalton). Mr Holland made the following statements: (1) Credibility will be a keynote of the election. (2) The Clutha hydro scheme will flood insignificant land; only a few orchards. (3) tn 1975 there were 10,000 unemployed; in 1978 there are 25,000. Regarding the Clutha. the Clutha Valley Advisory Committee (1976) reported that 2384 ha of farm and orchard land will be flooded. Regarding unemployment, the 1975 figure included approximately half as special workers. The 1978 figure excludes these. First, this is a distortion of figures. Second, special workers cannot be considered as being in employment. Having undergone the vicissitudes of the special work scheme at firsthand for the last 20 months, I feel more qualified to comment than Mr Holland. Credibility? Mr Holland and his National colleagues should re-examine the meaning of the word. — Yours, etc..
H. BUWALDA November, 1, 1978.
