Bad season for scallop fishermen
Wellington reporter
Scallop fisherman in Nelson-Marlborough have had a bad season, possibly because of poor spat-fail three years ago, says the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
Four to five years ago the fishery had relied on three, four and five-year scallops, but fishing over the last few years had been so heavy that the fishery now relied on three-year scallops. The Fisheries Licensing Authority licensed 136 boats for the fishery (including Coromandel) and all the boats took part. By September 22, 23 boats had been released from Nelson-Marlborough scallop fishing by the authority and were either on forms of fishing or laid up awaiting the dogfish and albacore seasons.
