Co-op moves into ice-cream field

Wards Frozen Products,! Ltd, has sold an interest of their company to the Te-| muka Co-op Dairy Company and the South Canterbury-Co-op Cool Stores, Ltd, the directors announced recently. The reasons for the dairy company’s interest is to handle the surplus- of farm fresh cream that will become available in the manufacturing process of Parmesan cheese. This cheese has a lower milk fat content than cheddar cheese and the excess milk fat is separated as sweet cream. It will also provide a freight saving as the cream would normally

be transported to Christchurch. Wards Christchurch Wholesale depot has been transferred to the Co-op Cool Stores operation in Hornby, which provides additional storage space. In the marketing field there is a potential advantage in the distribution of dairy products, as well as Wards existing lines which are distributed throughout Mid and South Canterbury. Export is another potential, as already five, consignments of ice-cream have been sent to the Middle East. Other export outlets are now being explored.
