Dowie wins draughts

John Dowie (Christchurch) won the South Island draughts championship yesterday on a countback from C. Johnstone (Feilding). The result was decided on their last-round game, Dowie having a win and a draw against Johnstone. Both players finished with 13 points. Roy Noonan (Christchurch) was third and Alan Amos • Christchurch) and George Hadlee (Timaru) were equal fourth. The defending South Island champion, Bob Rudd (Greymouth), was off form and was beaten by Johnstone, Dowie. and Noonan. The handicap section was won bv Alan Ward (Christchurch), from Tom Dowling (Greymouth) and Peter Cribbett (Christchurch). Players from Timaru, the West Coast and a few from the North Island competed.
