S.P.U.C. denies moves in Aust.

PA Wellington! A former president of the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child, Mr D. J.; Daigety, yesterday termed as! “nonsense” assertions that anti-abortionists were trying!

to stop New Zealand women getting abortions in Australia. The Wellington co-ordina-tor for Repeal, Mrs Frances [Stanton, said on Sunday that a recent S.P.U.C. meeting in Auckland attended by Mr Daigety was told that after the General Election, S.P.U.C., and sympathetic members of Parliament would prevail on Australian states to introduce domiciliary clauses in their abortion laws. S.P.U.C. leaders were trying to keep these moves quiet until after the election, but Repeal’s national co-or-j dinator, Mrs Brenda Cutress, was making investigations in' Australia, said Mrs Stanton. However, Mr Daigety said:; “I would be very surprised! if any member of Parliament: would lobby in Australia on this issue.” He said he was not aware of any moves. “What I have said, how i ever, is that we hope that! both Victoria and New South Wales will follow with legislation similar to that in New Zealand.” Mr Daigety said that “abortion on demand” in those states would be reduc-! ed if the law made it necessary for more than one doc-; tor to decide on an abortion. : Earlier story, Page 19
