Big container ship berths at Wellington
PA Wellington The world’s thirdlargest refrigerated container ship, the 44,000tonne New Zealand Pacific, berthed at Wellington yesterday morning on her maiden voyage. Built in Germany for the Shipping Corporation of New Zealand at a cost of SIOOM and carrying a full load of 2004 containers, she waited for high tide to ensure that she had clearance to enter the heads. Wellington is the first New Zealand port the ship has visited. Entering the harbour with an array of flags and containers stacked three-deep on her deck, she was greeted by
a flotilla of about a dozen small craft.
Among the crowd waiting on the wharf v.’ere representatives of the Japanese and Russian rowing teams who were awaiting the arrival in the vessel of 11 shells of racing boats. These wilt be taken to Auckland in time for the world rowing championships at Lake Karapiro.
The New Zealand Pacific has been built especially for New Zealand’s United Kingdom and European trade route. The brightorange vessel is 250 m long and has a crew of 41.
She will discharge general cargo and leave for Auckland tomorrow or Thursday.
