Foster sixth
NZPA staff correspondent New York The New Zealander Jack Foster yesterday ran a great race to finish sixth in the New York City marathon and easily win the veterans’ section. Foster, 46, and facing an enormous field of over 10,000, strode home in a time, of 2h 17min 28.95, smin behind the American, Bill Rogers, who won the race for the third year in a row. Kevin Ryan, New Zealand’s second runner in the classic, was in a good spot with about 12km to go but then suffered an attack of cramps and finished about sixtieth in 2h 26min.
“My thighs cramped at 18 miles,” a disappointed Ryan told the NZPA later. “They both went at the same time and 1 was down to not much
above a crawl. The era ruined my chances.” Ryan said he thought i problem might have be caused by his exhaustir run on a tartan track it Auckland recently when hi tried for the New Zealam. Ih record.
