Youngster to play for N.Z.

PA Wellington Deborah Hockley, of Canterbury, was the notable selection when the New Zealand women’s cricket team to tour Australia early next year was named last night. At 15, Hockley is the youngest player ever selected to represent New Zealand.

The team will have a month-long tour of Australia which will include three four-day matches in Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne. It will leave on January 6, after the completion of the Hallyburton-Johnston Shield inter-provincial competition to be held in Davonport from December 26 to January 6, and will return on February 2.

The team is: P. McKelvey (Wellington, captain); E. Miller, (North Shore, vice captain); C. Marrett, E. Ryan (both Auckland); S. Brown, S. Harris, D. Hockley, V. McGregor, S. Rattray, L. Shankland (all Canterbury); E. Badham (North Shore); B. Bevege, C. Henshilwood and J. Lord (all Wellington).
