N.Z. third in softball

NZPA special correspondent San Salvador New Zealand clinched third place in the world women’s softball championship yesterday beating Taiwan, 3-1, In an 11 innings battle for the bronze medal. The United States retained the world title, beating Canada, 4-0, in the final.

The game between New Zealand and Taiwan was one of the best of the tournament and was watched by about 9000 spectators. Carol Meihana, the winning pitcher, produced a courageous performance in sizzling temperatures, giving up six hits while Taiwan’s two pitchers allowed nine. Taiwan led 1-0, after four innings but with two out in top of the fifth innings the pinch-hitter, Louise Simonsen, put New Zealand on level terms with a right-field line drive which scored Jan Miles from second base.

Both teams let scoring chances slip in the following innings before New Zealand finally made the breakthrough in the fourth extra frame.
