Teddy Doon to atone

Special correspondent Auckland Teddy Doon has a chance, bv winning at Te Rapa today to regain some of the status lost with defeats during the last three weeks or so. Just four starts back Teddy Doon won the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes at Te Rapa, an impressive achievement in his first race since coming back from a winter spell. Meanwhile, though, he has been fifth at Te Aroha. unplaced altogether in the Guineas at Ellerslie and third in the one at Trentham. At both Te Aroha. over 1400 m and Trentham, over 1600 m Teddy Doon did a good deal of the pacemaking so his performances held some merit. He finished close at Trentham and with 200 m less to travel in today's P. and M. Plaza Purse should surely be hard to beat. With the top-weight of 57kg Teddy Doon is required to give 2kg to the next in the field, Golden Key and Regal Edition and as much as B.skg to those at the bottom so he has a stiff task. Regal Edition promises to go well, as do Bright Way (54.5 kg and Vulcan Lad (53kg).

The presence in the field of the Takanini stablemates, Lovestruck and Patronize, will ensure the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the Mainbrace Handicap, being given special attention because both horses will very likely run in the Rotorua Gold Cup next Saturday. The 1600 m today could be expected to prove a bit short for Lovestruck, but Patronize, capable yet of a good sprint, will very likely manage it well. One of his stablemates, Ross Rula, also from Ray Verner’s team, is also capable of winning, and Star Echo has better than ordinary prospects. Patronize, with luck of the running against him. beat all except Happy Union last time, in the Matamata Cup. Ross Rula has not raced since June but he has shown himself capable of performing well when fresh.

Star Echo, two starts back, ran Wanbin close in a weight-for age 1600 m at Ruakaka. and is down 7.5 kg for this one.
