Chch teams leading polo

From RAY CAIRNS in Wellington Christchurch teams are poised for their expected and almost annual successes in the Wales Bank water polo tournament in Wellington. But in the case of Beckenham-Sockburn. what others do will decide its fate. Beckenham-Sockburn, deprived of any national success last season, is unbeaten and level with Maranui, the team which headed it twice last season, after a thrilling 3-3 draw between the two at Naenae yesterday. Because it was only third in the Trans Tour tournament last Christmas. Beckenham-Sockburn was not placed in the seeded final and instead will be counting on Wharenui to do its best for its old Christchurch rival.

Should Wharenui beat or draw with Maranui, BeckenhamSockburn will win the tournament and take an important early lead in the three-tiered national club championship for the Ryan Cup. A win to Maranui would leave it level with Beckenham-Sockburn. with Wharenui third. Beckenham-Sockburn has consistently looked the best of the three and it is certainly in better earlv-season form than is usual, iust as Mark Harding is playing to a higher level than he customarv shows at the start of summer. Whether the women’s competition will be an all-Christchurch final is still not certain. Pegasus won one place in the final with its 12-7 win against Maranui. In Beckenham’s match against

Newmarket, the latter lost its captain, Lianne Mazzoleni, for brutality in the second quarter but Its experience enabled it to cline to a 9-9 draw and to win 12-11, after extra time. Beckenham has protested that its captain and goalie, Gillian Smeith. was wrongly prevented from returning to the game after being sent off for disrespect. The question will not be resolved until this morning. Wharenui’s women’s team provided unexpectedly stiff opposition for Beckenham before slipping away to a 3-6 loss. But Beckenham could not match the all-round strength and speed of Pegasus A in their section match, the latter winning, 6-1. Canterbury team results: Senior men.—Beckenham-
