South Africa
Sir, — Once again Mr Lindhorst (“The Press,” October 16) tries to mislead us, and to exonerate his country’s racial policies. It is a fact that, in all sectors of the economy, white workers receive considerably higher wages than blacks; in the mines the margin is
almost 12 times. It is a fact that unemployment among black, remains high (12 to 15 per cent). The ban on trade unions, the pass laws, and severe restrictions on movement are cruel facts erf life for South Africa's non-whites. The paradox of recruitment of foreign workers in a land of massive unemployment can be understood when it is noted that migrants are concentrated in the ultra-low-wage mining sector. Moreover, the continued replacement of migrant workers undercuts any attempts to organise labour or improve conditions. Apartheid does non-whites no favours. — Yours, etc., R. FINLAY. October 17, 1978.
