W.C.C. “dismissals”
Sir, — On the front page of “The Press” last Saturday an article said that four top officials of the World Council of Churches had been sacked. These so-called sackings were linked with speculations about the recent controversial grants of the W.C.C. to the Patriotic Front in Rhodesia.
This is a gross distortion of the truth. There have been no "sackings” or “dismissals”. The W.C.C. has a rule that the maximum term for officials must not exceed nine years. The four named in the report have all served their full terms. Unless some exceptional circumstances intervene they will automatically move on to other appointments at the end of the year. To say they are being “sacked” or “dismissed” because of some Supposed internal conflict within the W.C.C. is speculative reporting of the worst kind. The four officials are all held in the highest esteem. It is totally false to shy that the W.C.C. “has been shaken” by their sacking. — Yours, ANGUS H. MACLEOD, General Secretary, National Council of Churches. October 16, 1978.
