Canvassing

Sir, — The efforts to ensure that people are enrolled are laudable, but in the interests of the Electoral

Office it should be recognised that the production of supplementary rolls is a lengthy business, and it is pointless to bombard the office with a series of cards from the same voter just because an acknowledgment is not received immediately. Each card will be processed and appear on supplementary print-outs which become available each week at the appropriate Post Office, but even at this stage there is a backlog of some weeks. If a voter is encouraged to keep posting cards the position will be exacerbated. The important point is that, provided a voter has registered, he will be entitled to vote. When Labour Party supporters like F. J. Lilley (October 11) bend the facts in an attempt to make political capital, he asks to be shot down in flames, and Robin Gormack’s aim (October 14) was straight and true. — Yours, etc., J. R. GREGORY. October 16, 1978.
