Bishop of Auckland to retire

PA Auckland After 18 years as Bishop of Auckland, the Rt Rev. E. A. Gowing will retire at the end of the year. No date has yet been announced for an electoral synod where a new bishop will be selected by the diocese.

Bishop Gowing has been in Britain for the Lambeth Conference of bishops and will return to New Zealand on October 9.

The Ven. E. A. Gowing, Archdeacon of Christchurch, was consecrated Bishop of Auckland on November 1, 1969, aged 47. He was born in Sydney, and later gained his M.A. at Oxford. Although he spent a great deal of time in England he has been described as having an accent, “which while not quite Australian is certainly not Oxford or Cambridge.” He was ordained in the diocese of Manchester in 1938. He came to New Zealand in 1950 to take up the appointment of Dean of Nelson. He stayed in Nelson until 1956, when he was appointed Vicar of Merivale, and later Archdeacon of Christchurch.
