Freedom of speech

Sir, — The campaign to close the South African Con-sulate-General is not intended to be part of the movement towards suppression of free speech in this country, as E. Sutherland (August 28) assumes. The object is to have the New Zealand Government withdraw its recognition from the white minority regime. Friends of the racist dictatorship who support its morally indefensible claim to be the rightful government of the black majority, may speak here as private persons if they wish. But to allow them an official status implies our acceptance of the legitimacy of the regime they speak for. In all justice, we should recognise only the black people’s own black representatives. — Yours, etc., DEREK BROWNE. August 28, 1978.
