T.T.U. poised to win

By

DAVID LEGGAT

With its third successive win in nine days yesterday, Trans Tours United is poised to win its third Rothmans Soccer League title as the season draws to an end. It beat Nelson United, 2-0, both goals coming in the second half, and now trails Mount Wellington by one point with two games in hand. It also has a far superior goal difference. Unfortunately, Christchurch’s other Rothmans League side, Woolston W.M.C., did not have the same success. It gave its worst home display to lose, 1 0, to Columbus Waterside. Waterside was appallingly bad and it was only an inability to convert clear chances that prevented Woolston scoring half a dozen goals. However it certainly did not play well enough to deserve two points. The loss means that Woolston’s chances of escaping relegation are very slim. If it can win its last three matches, against Hamilton, Mount Wellington and Nelson, all in Christchurch, it might survive. However, on its present form, this just does not look possible. The Mount dropped a vital point in a 1-1 draw with North Shore. Brian McKeown scored before half-time and Bill de Graaf, coming on as a substitute, equalised in the 84th minute. Blockhouse Bay made up for its disastrous last two performances with a 4-1 win over Wellington Diamond United. Results:— Courier Rangers 3 (Alan Redding, Jim Nimmo, Rene Marek), Hamilton 1 (John McDermid). Half-time 1-1. Nelson 0, Trans Tours United 2 (Steve Sumner, Kevin Muigrew). Half-time 0-0. North Shore 1 (Brian McKeown), Mount Wellington 1 (Bill de Graaf). Half-time 1-0. Woolston W.M.C. 0, Columbus Waterside 1 (Jim Richardson). Half-time 0-0. Blockhouse Bay 4 (Mike Farac 2. Willie Clark, Don Armstrong), Wellington Diamond United 1 (Dave Farron). Half-time. 3-0. Stop Out v. Eastern Suburbs
