NZPA-Reuter London Liverpool gave fair warning with a 4-1 win over Manchester City on Saturday that the task of defending the European Cup will not deflect them from their aim of regaining the English Championship. It was their third win in I three matches of the new (season. Manchester United also began the day with a 100 per cent record but it crumbled with their visit to Ipswich, who won 3-0 after losing both previous matches. The England striker, Paul Mariner, scored in each half to restore Ipswich, the Cupholders, to something like ►he form expected of them when they are at full strength. Liverpool’s cross-city neighbour, Everton, also recorded a third win in a row, thanks to a goal earlj’ in the second half against Arsenal. West Bromwich, too, kept their winning streak alive with a 4-0 win over newlypromoted Bolton. Aston Villa, however, after an acclaimed midweek win at Tottenham, dropped their first points. | Queen’s Park Rangers, Birmingham, with a 1-1 draw against Derby, earned their first point of the season. In the second division the promoted clubs shone. Wrexham beat Orient in London 1-0, and Cambridge shared two goals at Leicester against hosts who were in division one last season. Preston were held to a 2-2 draw by Sheffield United, whose opening goal was scored by Alex Sabella, the third Argentine to sign for an English club since the World Cup finals. In Scotland, Celtic dazzled as they beat Motherwell 5-1, giving’them six points from three matches.
