Rare double in indoor bowls
Edwin Ashby completed a rare feat when he won the Canterbury indoor bowls fours title at the Kearney’s Road Hall yesterday. He is the defending titleholder, and became only the second skip to win the title in successive years. Ashby — with a different combination to that which won last year — beat Eric Tebay 16-5 in a one-sided final.
A four, single, five and two on the first four ends shot him into a commanding 12-0 lead, that Tebay was not able to overcome.
Tebay scored on four successive ends, but could manage only singles apd a two. After Ashby added another two singles and a two. he conceded the game with an end to play. In his semi-final. Tebay had to make a late run to edge out Sam Henderson, 9-8. With two ends to play, Henderson led 8-4. Tebay scored a three then the necessary single to force an extra end. A magnificent draw shot took the jack back for a single. Ashby was in command in his semi-final against Michael Immers and won 10-6. Results:— First round.—Mrs P. Woodfield 14, M. L. Davis 5; M.
