Cycling Papanui junior team loses to Hornby

It is a strange day indeed when the list of Canterbury time trial champions does not include a Papanui team. But that was the case at Sefton yesterday when its junior team lost its title to a young Hornby team, and the seniors succumbed for the first time since 1966. Certainly, Papanui was beaten on a disqualification two years ago, but Timaru’s clear-cut and deserved victory yesterday ended a long run of successes.

Papanui could certainly point to losing Blair Stockwell with a puncture after 20km or so, but, equally, Timaru was without Graham Howes after the team briefly took a wrong turning at much the same point. Nor could there be any question of the margin of its victory: 2hr 29min 40sec —under the national qualifying time — against Papanui’s . 2:39.18, and the 2:44.28 of Woolston. There was a much more entertaining contest for the junior title. Hornby, in the shape of Bruce ’ Brunton, Mark Nichols, Terry Gyde, and Steve Burdon established an early lead of 20sec over Papanui’s Paul Flattery, Greg Tump, Shane Smith and Murray Steele. A little either side of the halfway mark of 20km, Papanui lost Steele and Burden punctured, and for virtually all the last lap, Hornby hovered round an advantage for 30sec, finally finishing 33sec clear with its smart 59min 53sec. Woolston, the only other starter, did 63:05. However, its novice team made amends by winning

well, by more than a minuti its 20km event. All team.lost riders, invariably early, but Woolston gained most of its advantage in the final third. Hornby was third, just over a halt-minute behind Mairehau.

Training squads for the national championships, in both novice and junior grades, were named. They are:

Junior: Brunton, Nichols, Gyde, Burdon (Hornby), Flattery. Smith, Tump, Tony Fuller (Papanui), Tony Duder, Barry Hulbert (Woolston).
