Basketball Scratch sides excel

Checkers and Mairehau provided some entertaining basketball in the final round of the men’s first division competition at Cowles Stadium on Saturday. Checkers eventually won. 63-56. Y.M.C.A. beat Arahui, 66-56, in another hard-fought game. Neither match was of any real consequence though, because the title was decided last week-end when Jaks-High School Old Boys beat Checkers.

Checkers A 71, Mairehau A S 3 Cowles Stadium seemed to lack players and spectators, possibly because of the rugby test, and they missed a fine fast-moving game. Checkers, reduced ta four regular players, called upon their second division players to assist. The club’s president and former Canterbury representative, Kevin Baker, put in much useful work on defence for Checkers. Most of the first half was fairly even; Checkers took the lead for the first time, 27-25, after 17mln and then, with a burst of scoring, led, 39-33, at half-time. Mairehau—playing better team basketball—closed the gap to 55-51 after 13min, but Checkers ahead and won comfortably. The architect of Checkers’ win was the ever-impressive Denis Barry, who shot 25 points. The fast-breaking Carl Dickel showed after scoring each of his 20 points. Mike Seaward made good use of the ball in his 16 points, and gen Searle. Mike Stokes and Peter Van Hout also had good games, all reaching double figures.

Y.M.C.A. A U, Aranui A 56 Good early team work from Aranui saw it deservedly lead 2242 after Umin but Y.M.C.A. started to find chinks in Aranui’s defence and gradually

dosed the tap to trail 30-35 at half-time. Two young players showing much promise were Y.M.C.A.’s Peter Kuipers and Andy MlUar. They scored 21 and 10 points respectively. Korrle Ritama covered a lot of court in his IS points for Aranui and Bert Knops impressed with deceptive movements for his eijht points. The first half was played at a fast, open pace but In the second spell play deteriorated slightly as players tired. Nevertheless, there was some very good basketbai particularly from Kuipers, as Y.M.C.A. levelled, 45-45, after llmln into the second half. It was level again at 54-54 with 4min to go but good team work by Y.M.C.A. allowed Ken Jones and Kuipers to score more easily and control the remaining minutes of the game. Burnside A 2, University A 0 The University holidays are in full swing and University' failed to take the court with five players and defaulted to Burnside. In the ensuing friendly game including both coaches, University beat Burnside. 83-54. First division scoring details: Checkers A 71 (D. Barry 25, C. Dickel 20, P. Daigneault 13, G. Longley 7, K.
