Checkers luck at last

Checkers A, the unlucky side in the women’s first division basketball competition, had a deserved win over Mairehau A in the final round of competition play at Cowles Stadium on Saturday. Rebels had a comfortable victory over United but University staved off a last minute challenge from Rangiora. The only game still to be played this season is the third match of the women’s final between Mairehau High Schoo! and (Mairehau on Saturday. Checkers A 43, Mairehau A 56

Checkers set about this match with great determination to show it should have had a place in the competition final. After a tight opening 10 minutes. Mairehau led 19-12 but consistent shooting by Sharon Renneli and Sally Cox put Checkers ahead, 37-23. by the interval. Mairehau placing with only six players, two of whom had influ enza, made a second-half comeback—giving very clean, open basketball from both sides.

In the absence of the captain, Jenny Armstrong. Patsy Barry deputised and worked extremely hard, scoring 13 points. She set up young Caroline Perry and Andrea Taylor, who scored 15 and 12 points respectively. M. Renneli (18 points! did well for Checkers. University was just ahead 28-27 at half-time. Adrianna Beukenholdt found the basket regularly, scoring 30 points for University and by the tenth minute had taken it ahead 51-39. Ann Brokenshire and Penny King worked tirelessly too. Rangiora’s effort was again lead by Kim Smith with 26 points but most of the hard work was done by the captain. Kongo King, and Carolyn Winter.

Rebels 52, Christchurch United 36 A good first half bv a determined United put it ahead 21-17 at half-time but it was unable to score for Umin of the second half. Rebels, with Shirley Le Warne in form, shot ahead 36-23. The rest of the game was fairly even.

Allona Tale and Muriel Williams worked hard to feed the ball to Le Warne, and Heather Carr played her usual leading role for United, scoring 14 points. Results:
