New Aust. duty ‘benefit to N.Z.’

Parliamentary reporter New Zealand should benefit from the imposition of an additional 12.5 per cent duty on world export" to Australia, said the Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Adan.s-Schneider) yesterday. The new duty, announced in the Australian Budget earlier this week, would not apply to New Zealand goods sold in Australia. He had received details of the Customs tariff amendment and the list of goods involved and had confirmation that, the additional duty would not apply to New Zealand goods.

The new duty would apply to nearly ad goods under quantitative restriction in Australia but New Zealand would be exempt under the specific quotas and und£r her world quotas. These covered items such as footwear and apparel. “The over-all result therefore seems likely to be to the advantage of New Zealand exporters in that they will gain in competitive advantage vis-a-vis imports from other sources,’’ said Mr Adam s-Schneider. “This might lead to an increased demand for some New Zealand products.”
