Jailed woman a ‘patent liar’

NZPA Sydney A Sydney judge has described a New Zealand woman he sentenced to eight years jail for drug smuggling as “a patent liar.” Judge Hicks told the Criminal Court that the woman’s version of events in the drug smuggling ring reached “heights of absurdity.” Patricia Mary Moyland. aged 40, of Dunedin, had pleaded not guilty to importing cannabis sticks in 1975. Her husband, Michael Moyland. pleaded guilty to the same offence and is already serving an eight-year jail term.

Another principal In the drug ring, Graham Twadell, aged 34, a builder, of Woollahra a Sydney suburb, was sentenced to six years jail yesterday. A third principal, Frank Christopher Lawrence, aged 35, a barrister of Paddington, Sydney, was remanded for sentencing to September 8. In jailing Moyland, Judge Hicks commented that she was possibly the brains behind the drug ring. He said he had considerable doubt that there would not be a sum of money waiting for Moyland and her husband when they came out of jail.
